Jet-Ski tourists in Morocco fatally shot by Algerian coastguard for crossing maritime border

A tragic incident unfolded as two jet-ski enthusiasts, Bilal Kissi and Abdelali Merchouer, both holding dual French-Moroccan nationality, lost their lives in Morocco while holidaying.

The Algerian coastguard fired upon them after they inadvertently crossed into Algerian waters while navigating off the Moroccan resort of Saidia.

According to witness accounts, this unfortunate event occurred after the tourists mistakenly ventured into the neighboring maritime territory.

A third individual, Smail Snabe, also a French-Moroccan dual national, was apprehended by the Algerian coastguard and later faced a prosecutor’s inquiry.

Reports reveal that the group consisted of four men, all riding jet skis in the Mediterranean, when the incident transpired.

Mohamed Kissi, the brother of one of the victims, shared his harrowing experience, recounting how they realized they were in Algerian waters when a black Algerian dinghy approached and opened fire on them.

This act claimed the lives of Bilal Kissi and Abdelali Merchouer, while Smail Snabe was detained by Algerian authorities.

The Moroccan navy subsequently rescued Mohamed Kissi, taking him back to the Saidia marina.

In response to this devastating loss, Abdelkarim Kissi, the cousin of one of the victims, appealed to Moroccan authorities to bring the case before international courts, emphasizing that the victims were merely vacationing with friends and did not deserve such a tragic fate due to an inadvertent border crossing.
