Major change expected at Target stores: Kmart’s Anko brand products to be introduced

Kmart’s Anko brand products are poised to make an appearance in Target stores, as the parent company Wesfarmers revealed its plans to introduce “select Anko ranges across hard home and general merchandise” into Target stores starting from early 2024.

Approximately 25% of Target’s stock will consist of Anko products moving forward.

Anko brand spreads to Canada and worldwide

Brian Walker, CEO of Retail Doctor Group, explained that “hard home” likely refers to Anko-branded homeware items such as decor, small furniture, and appliances.

He anticipated that Wesfarmers might create unique Anko products exclusive to Target, aiming to differentiate the brand from Kmart and create a distinct identity.

This development follows Anko’s expansion into Canada, where it’s now available through retailer Zellers.

Additionally, Wesfarmers indicated that they’re exploring opportunities to introduce Anko products into new global markets.

This strategic move to infuse Target with the Anko brand arrives as the retailer continues to face challenges.

Target’s financial results showed a marginal one percent increase in total sales for the year, with a significant seven percent decline in the six-month period from January to June.

In contrast, Kmart’s sales experienced a notable 22% rise during the year.

Wesfarmers acknowledged Target’s ongoing profitability but described trading conditions for its homeware and toys range as “challenging.”

The recent announcement of merging Target’s operations with Kmart to form a $10 billion business has prompted speculation about Target’s future.

While Wesfarmers intends to maintain both brands, experts predict an increasing conversion of Target stores to Kmart outlets, particularly in densely populated areas, with Target potentially focusing more on regional and online presence.
