Adegboyega Oyetola, the recently appointed Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, has officially assumed his role, emphasizing his commitment to establishing responsible management practices that ensure the effective utilization of Nigeria’s marine resources.
During his inauguration at the ministry in Abuja, Oyetola expressed his gratitude for the opportunity provided by the President to spearhead the growth of marine resources.
He urged his management team to collaborate with him in fulfilling his ministerial responsibilities.

Oyetola recognized the substantial potential of Nigeria’s blue economy, considering its vastness, and stressed its significance as a notable global player in an industry estimated to be valued at around $3 trillion.
He emphasized that the blue economy could significantly contribute to revenue generation and address unemployment by creating job opportunities, making it crucial to harness its potential effectively.
Addressing the enhancement of trade through navigable inland waterways, Oyetola highlighted the necessity to develop practical strategies for maximizing the use of rivers and waterways for both cargo transport and passenger travel.
He proposed comprehensive dredging initiatives for strategically vital water routes to facilitate the movement of goods and people.
In her welcoming address, Dr. Magdalene Ajani, the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy, assured a collaborative working relationship with the minister.
She emphasized that their joint efforts could propel the marine and blue economy sector forward, enhancing its impact on Nigeria’s overall economy.

Dr. Ajani also mentioned previous efforts in advancing the blue economy, citing the committee chaired by the former Vice President, which focused on this sector.
