Taiwo Awoniyi, the Super Eagles striker currently playing for Nottingham Forest in the Premier League, has shared his remarkable journey of triumphing over adversity, reflecting on nights he went to bed without food during his childhood.
Joining Liverpool at 18, Awoniyi faced work permit issues and embarked on seven loan spells across three countries before his £17.5 million move from Union Berlin to Nottingham Forest last summer.
Awoniyi, who kicked off the new season with a goal against Emirates Stadium, shed light on the challenges faced by many African players, emphasizing the difficulties of upbringing.
He recounted his own experiences, including having to walk an hour to reach a training ground and his family’s financial limitations.

“I’ve gone through different stages of difficulty and it helps me on the pitch. I’ve had to work things out for myself. It’s helpful to have been through those experiences,” Awoniyi explained.
While his loan performances in various countries showcased his skills, it wasn’t enough for Liverpool’s formidable squad led by Jurgen Klopp.
After discussions with Klopp, Awoniyi made a pivotal decision to transition to Union Berlin in 2021, and the words of encouragement from Klopp remained etched in his mind.
Recalling the moment, Awoniyi shared, “Jurgen Klopp told me, ‘I think it’s good for you, Taiwo, because if a club is really pushing for you then it shows how much they believe in you’.”
