Illegal firearm charges against Emefiele dropped by court

A Federal High Court in Lagos has dismissed charges of illegal firearm possession against Godwin Emefiele, the suspended Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

The charges were struck out due to lack of diligent prosecution, following an application by the Federal Government to withdraw the charges.

Emefiele had been arraigned on a two-count charge of illegal possession of firearms and ammunition, and was granted bail on July 25 with a bail bond of N20 million.

However, a separate case involving Emefiele, where he faces a fresh 20-count charge, was adjourned due to the absence of one of the defendants.

The arraignment was scheduled at the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court in Maitama and has been rescheduled for August 23 upon the request of Justice Muazu.
