Nigerians fail to admit I’m on the same level as American artists – Burna Boy

Nigerian music sensation and Grammy awardee, Damini Ogulu, popularly known as Burna Boy, has expressed his frustration with the prevailing sentiment among his fellow countrymen that he doesn’t measure up to American music icons.

In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, Burna Boy disclosed that his upcoming album, titled “I Told Them…,” serves as his nonchalant retort to those who have consistently attempted to undermine his stature, both in the early stages of his career and presently.

The self-proclaimed “African Giant” voiced his exasperation at the tendency of Nigerians to elevate emerging American rappers above him.

He elucidated, “Even today, there are many Nigerians who can readily name a novice American rapper and assert that they surpass Burna Boy in prominence.

It’s beyond their comprehension. They question how someone who shares my background could even contend with an American artist on the same level.”

Burna Boy further remarked that American songs once dominated the playlists of Nigerian media outlets, but the rise of afrobeats has reshaped this dynamic.

He indicated that his album serves as a bold statement to challenge these perceptions and solidify his stature in the global music scene.
