The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has strongly condemned the killings of Nigerien soldiers in an attack carried out by suspected jihadist groups.
The incident occurred near Niger’s western border with Mali, resulting in the tragic deaths of seventeen soldiers.
The defense ministry confirmed that an army detachment fell victim to a terrorist ambush close to the town of Koutougou.
Twenty soldiers were wounded, some severely, and were subsequently transported to the capital city, Niamey.
The military reported that over 100 assailants were eliminated during their retreat.

In response to this devastating event, ECOWAS expressed deep concern over the loss of soldiers’ lives in Niger and extended heartfelt sympathy to the families affected by this tragedy.
The organization denounced these attacks and conveyed its condolences to the people of Niger and the bereaved families.
ECOWAS also reiterated its previous call for the restoration of democratic governance in Niger and the reinstatement of democratically elected President Mohamed Bazoum.
President Bazoum had been removed from power by a military coup on July 26, leading to increased instability in the country.
ECOWAS appealed to the military leadership responsible for the coup to prioritize the reestablishment of constitutional order and focus on safeguarding the nation’s fragile security situation.
