Attack near Mali claims lives of 17 Niger soldiers – Ministry

Suspected jihadists launched an attack near Nigeria’s western border with Mali, resulting in the tragic loss of seventeen Niger soldiers on Tuesday, as confirmed by the defense ministry.

The incident occurred when an army detachment fell victim to a terrorist ambush close to the town of Koutougou.

The ministry’s late-night statement revealed that an additional twenty soldiers sustained injuries, with six in critical condition, all of whom were swiftly transported to the capital, Niamey.

In response, the military neutralized over 100 assailants as they retreated.

The Sahel region in Africa has been grappling with a prolonged jihadist insurgency for more than a decade, originating in northern Mali in 2012 and subsequently spreading to Niger and Burkina Faso in 2015.

The “three borders” region shared by these countries frequently witnesses assaults from rebel groups linked to the Islamic State and Al-Qaeda.

The widespread unrest has led to significant loss of life, including military personnel, law enforcement officers, civilians, and the displacement of millions from their homes.

The persistent violence has fueled military takeovers in all three nations since 2020. Niger became the latest to experience a coup on July 26, when President Mohamed Bazoum was ousted.

Niger is contending with a separate jihadist insurgency in its southeast, stemming from militants crossing over from northeastern Nigeria, where the Boko Haram campaign was initiated in 2010.
