Arsenal secures Brentford goalkeeper Raya on season long loan

Arsenal has added Spanish goalkeeper David Raya to their roster on a season-long loan from Brentford.

Raya’s arrival at the Emirates Stadium sets the stage for a compelling competition with England’s Aaron Ramsdale for the starting goalkeeper position for the Gunners.

The 27-year-old showcased his skills by playing in all 38 Premier League matches for Brentford last season, earning widespread acclaim for his standout performances.

Although Raya was previously linked to a potential £30 million transfer to Arsenal, the loan deal reportedly cost the North London club approximately £3 million.

Arsenal also holds the option to convert Raya’s signing into a permanent transfer for a reported £27 million at the conclusion of the season.

Edu, Arsenal’s Sporting Director, expressed enthusiasm about the addition, stating that Raya’s arrival enhances the squad’s quality and depth.

Raya’s presence was noted in the stands during Arsenal’s opening match of the season, where they secured a 2-1 victory over Nottingham Forest.

The competition between Raya and Ramsdale for the coveted goalkeeper role is expected to intensify, with Ramsdale having proven himself since joining Arsenal in 2021.

Mikel Arteta, Arsenal’s manager, sought to enhance competition for Ramsdale after the departure of backup goalkeeper Matt Turner to Nottingham Forest.

Raya’s loan move also came alongside an extension of his contract with Brentford for two additional years, featuring an optional extra year.

The deal structure facilitates a rapid transfer agreement between the two clubs, with the intention of making the transfer permanent in the future.
