Nigerian musicians generate N11bn revenue on Spotify in 2022

In 2022, Nigerian artists achieved a remarkable revenue milestone of over N11 billion on the Spotify music streaming platform.

According to a statement released by the company, the Nigerian music industry experienced a substantial 63% growth in revenue from 2021 to 2022, with Spotify revenue alone seeing an impressive 74% increase during the same period.

The statement also revealed that the number of Nigerian artists earning royalties of more than N5 million and N10 million solely from Spotify surged by 25% in 2022.

Notably, this revenue calculation only includes earnings from Spotify and doesn’t encompass other income sources such as concert ticket sales, merchandise, and other recording platforms.

Jocelyne Muhutu-Remy, Spotify’s Managing Director for Sub-Saharan Africa, emphasized the platform’s dedication to supporting musicians in making a sustainable living from their art.

The release of these revenue figures, she stated, is a demonstration of Spotify’s accountability and commitment to its mission.

Spotify also highlighted the global impact of Afrobeats, mentioning its influence beyond music to areas like food, dance, and language export.

The statement revealed that Afrobeats enjoys significant popularity in cities like London, Paris, Abuja, Nairobi, Amsterdam, and Accra, showcasing its cross-border appeal.
