Niger coup leaders establish new government

Niger’s junta has announced the establishment of a new government, just two weeks after the ousting of democratically-elected President Mohamed Bazoum.

The military leaders revealed the development on state television and introduced 21 new ministers.

The newly-formed government will be led by Ali Mahaman Lamine Zeine, with generals from the military governing council overseeing the defense and interior ministries.

Meanwhile, West African leaders are gathering to discuss potential military actions against the junta.

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) had previously imposed sanctions on the junta, and while military intervention is considered a last resort, the regional bloc continues to emphasize the importance of diplomacy in resolving the crisis.
