FG reports $7 billion economic damage from 2022 floods

The Nigerian government recently revealed that the floods in 2022 inflicted a substantial direct economic blow of $7 billion on the country.

This disclosure was made during an event organized by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, where Vice President Kashim Shettima’s speech was read by his Deputy Chief of Staff, Ibrahim Hassan.

The calamity claimed over 600 lives, marking it as a grave outcome of Nigeria’s struggle with climate change.

Shettima underscored the immense challenge posed by climate change, labeling it humanity’s paramount concern.

Despite Nigeria’s relatively minor contribution to global carbon emissions, it ranks among the top ten countries worldwide most vulnerable to climate change impacts.

The Vice President emphasized the personal impact of climate change, as he himself hails from the North-Eastern region, which has endured the scars of climate-related effects like drought, desertification, disrupted rainfall patterns, sandstorms, and devastating floods.

These dire consequences have wreaked havoc on agricultural lands, infrastructure, and human settlements.
