President Bola Tinubu held a meeting on Sunday with governors from Nigerian states that share borders with Niger Republic.
The gathering, which took place in Abuja’s State House, was organized as part of the President’s consultations concerning the situation in Niger.
Attendees included governors Ahmed Aliyu (Sokoto), Umar Namadi (Jigawa), Mai Malam Buni (Yobe), Idris Nasir (Kebbi), and Dr. Dikko Radda (Katsina).
The proposed action against the military junta in Niger has sparked opposition among Northern Elites, who are concerned about the potential repercussions on Nigeria.
In his role as Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States, Tinubu issued a seven-day ultimatum for the return of democracy to Niger through the restoration of power to Mohammed Bazoum.
This ultimatum resulted in sanctions, including border closures and a suspension of flights.
The President sought National Assembly approval to deploy military personnel to Niger, a request declined by the Senate, which advised caution in addressing the political situation, involving Tinubu and other regional leaders.
