Ismaila Abubakar, the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Sports and Youth Development, has urged Nigeria’s women’s national basketball team, D’Tigress, to steer clear of drug addiction and other negative behaviors in order to fully reap the rewards of their victory at the 2023 FIBA Women’s Afrobasket Tournament.

Speaking during a reception held for the team at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja, Abubakar emphasized the importance of maintaining clean athletic practices.

D’Tigress, who secured their fourth consecutive African championship by defeating Senegal 84-74 in the final, were lauded by Abubakar for their remarkable accomplishment.

He conveyed President Bola Tinubu’s pride in the team’s triumph and stressed the need for consistent dedication and preparation, especially with the 2024 Olympics on the horizon.

Coach Rena Wakama expressed gratitude to the nation and the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) for the opportunity to lead the team, while MVP Amy Okonkwo attributed their success to unity and team spirit.

Point Guard Elizabeth Balogun highlighted the challenge posed by Mozambique and called for improved kit provision for future endeavors.
