The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has announced the award of a N5 billion contract for the rehabilitation of the Abuja Rail Mass Transit (ARMT) system.
Olusade Adesola, the Permanent Secretary of FCTA, stated that the aim is to restore the vital rail transportation infrastructure, which is considered the “lifeblood of Abuja.”
The project will be carried out by China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation Ltd (CCECC) within a 12-month timeframe.
The Abuja light rail plays a crucial role in easing transportation challenges and enhancing mobility for residents.
However, the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic led to a temporary shutdown of the rail system, during which essential equipment was vandalized by hoodlums, causing a significant setback.
As a response, contracts have been awarded for the provision of security to safeguard this valuable asset.
The rehabilitation will involve repairing and replacing damaged equipment, upgrading facilities, and implementing modern security measures to protect against future threats.
