In Blantyre, Malawi, police have rescued a newborn baby girl who was buried alive by her 21-year-old mother, Olivia Jonas.

The incident occurred on August 1, 2023, when the suspect gave birth to the baby girl at home and buried her in a nearby bush without alerting anyone.

She later lied to her husband, claiming to have miscarried, and sought medical attention at Mlambe Hospital.

When questioned by nurses, she falsely claimed to have delivered a stillborn and buried the baby nearby.

After receiving the report from the hospital, police officers interviewed the suspect, and she eventually confessed to burying the baby.

The officers, along with medical personnel, rushed to the scene and exhumed the child, finding her alive and in good health.

Olivia Jonas is currently receiving medical treatment at Mlambe Hospital and is expected to face charges of concealing the birth of a child.

She is from Mjamba Village in the area of Traditional Authority Kapeni in Blantyre District.
