Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has cautioned the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) against using military force to restore democratic order in Niger Republic.
In a statement he personally signed in Abuja, Atiku emphasized that the crisis in Niger requires sustained diplomatic efforts.
He expressed concern that the military intervention in Niger has caused tension across the West Africa sub-region, drawing international attention, including neighboring Nigeria.
Atiku urged ECOWAS, led by President Bola Tinubu of Nigeria, to prioritize diplomatic engagement and avoid pursuing military hostilities that could worsen the situation.
The political tension in Niger arose on July 28 when General Abdourahamane Tchiani, head of the country’s presidential guard, overthrew President Mohammed Bazoum and declared himself head of state.
ECOWAS, in response, imposed heavy sanctions on Niger, but Mali, Burkina Faso, and Guinea have aligned with the Niger military junta, warning against any military action.
Atiku urged ECOWAS to uphold sustained dialogue channels in resolving the crisis and reinstating democratic governance in Niger.
