Coup supporters’ cyberattack MTN Nigeria amid Niger crisis

Pro-Nigerien hackers, known as Anonymous Sudan, recently made an attempt to shut down MTN Nigeria’s network as a protest against Nigeria’s position on the coup in the Republic of Niger.

The hacktivist group claimed responsibility for the cyberattack, citing Nigeria’s proposed military intervention in Niger as the reason behind their actions.

However, despite their efforts, the hackers failed to successfully breach MTN’s network due to robust cybersecurity measures in place.

In response to the threat, MTN reaffirmed its commitment to invest in its cybersecurity infrastructure and bolster its firewalls.

The National Information Technology Development Agency issued a warning about the hacking activities and advised relevant institutions to strengthen their cybersecurity readiness.

Amidst the escalating situation, the British embassy announced plans to reduce its staff numbers in Niger, and the United States ordered the evacuation of some personnel and families from its embassy in the country.

Both countries cited security concerns and ongoing protests in Niger as reasons for their decisions.

Nevertheless, the US State Department reiterated its commitment to Nigerien democracy and assured continued diplomatic engagement with the country.
