The Chairman of Ibaji Local Government Area, William Iko-Ojo, has been suspended by the Kogi State House of Assembly following serious allegations against him.
The suspension was based on a petition filed by Jibril Ojochenemi, accusing the Chairman of misappropriation of public funds, gross misconduct, abuse of office, and posing a security threat.
The petition revealed that the Chairman spent a substantial amount of N536,137,064.9k without proper budget provision, as reported in the audited financial statement of the 21 Local Government Areas of Kogi State.
The Majority Leader of the House, Suleiman Abdulrazaq, urged the Assembly to investigate instances of security breaches and disregard for the rule of law.
The Deputy Speaker, Enema Paul, supported the suspension, emphasizing the seriousness of the allegations.
Other members of the House also backed the move, citing a crisis in Ibaji that resulted in the death of a woman.
As the investigation proceeds, the Vice Chairman will take over the responsibilities of the Local Government in an acting capacity.
The House has also established a committee to look into the allegations, while calling on security agencies to monitor the situation closely to maintain law and order.
