The National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA) has refuted a Twitter user’s claim that a recent Red Cross outreach in Abuja showed a spike in HIV cases.
The user stated that 119 out of 197 people tested positive, with 60% of them being males. NACA responded by asking for specific details about the outreach, but the user couldn’t provide them and subsequently deleted the tweet.
NACA confirmed that the information was false and clarified that Abuja’s HIV prevalence rate remains at 1.3%, the same as Nigeria’s overall rate.
The agency strongly condemns the use of false statistics to spread critical health messages and emphasizes the importance of disseminating accurate information to combat HIV/AIDS and promote public health.
NACA urges Nigerians to practice safe sex and take responsibility for their well-being.
