Group urges ECOWAS and international community to impose sanctions on Niger coup plotters

Citizens Action for Good Governance (CAGG) has called on the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the international community to impose sanctions on the leaders responsible for the recent military coup in Niger.

While condemning the coup, CAGG emphasized that such undemocratic measures were outdated and not an appropriate way for military officers to address their grievances.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s prompt deployment of troops to secure the Nigeria-Niger Republic border was praised by the National Coordinator of CAGG, Mallam Nazir Galadanchi.

The coup in Niger is part of a concerning trend in sub-Saharan Africa, with several successful coups in recent years.

CAGG considers the coup barbaric and uncivilized, asserting that President Mohammed Bazoum, the democratically elected leader, should be released along with his family, and democracy should be restored.

The organization urges the international community to unite against such attempts to undermine democracy and impose targeted sanctions on coup perpetrators.
