Nigeria and Russia commit to strengthening ties

During the ongoing Russia-Africa Economic and Humanitarian Forum at the Russia-Africa Summit in St. Petersburg, Russian President Vladimir Putin pledged to strengthen relations with African countries, including Nigeria.

He assured leaders from the continent that Russia was prepared to collaborate with African states to bolster various sectors, such as energy, information communication, education, and health.

Vice President Kashim Shettima represented Nigeria at the summit and emphasized the nation’s intention to partner with Russia in reviving the Aluminium Smelter Company of Nigeria.

Shettima held meetings with Russian Aluminium Company, UC RUSAL, and other stakeholders to discuss the revival of the plant.

Putin highlighted the potential for increased trade and economic cooperation between Russia and Africa beyond the $18 billion turnover seen in 2022.

He reaffirmed Russia’s commitment to food security in Africa and expressed the country’s willingness to support African states in tackling food crises.

The Russian leader also stressed the importance of agricultural development and cooperation with African countries, recognizing their immense potential for agricultural growth.

The summit was attended by several African heads of states and high-level officials, fostering discussions aimed at enhancing trade, economic, and humanitarian cooperation.

Russia expressed its readiness to assist African nations in achieving their developmental goals, and both sides sought to strengthen their partnerships for mutual benefit.
