A Nigerian doctor residing in the United Kingdom has faced the loss of custody of his 16-year-old son to the government following an incident where he disciplined the boy by flogging him with a belt.
The details of this case were brought to light by a child rights advocate, pepstalk1, who shared the story on her Instagram page.
According to the advocate’s account, the doctor caught his son and some friends watching an inappropriate video late at night while they were supposed to be studying for their General Certificate of Secondary Education examination.
Enraged, the father proceeded to discipline his son by using a belt to administer punishment, all while making comments about how this behavior could affect the boy’s future aspirations to become a doctor.
The friends of the doctor’s son promptly reported the incident to the police, leading to a court case.
During the proceedings, the friends testified that they overheard the father expressing his desire for the son to study medicine, which seemed to be the subject the boy was reluctant to pursue.
As a result of this incident and other alleged instances of excessive discipline, the court ruled that the doctor’s 16-year-old son should be taken into the care of custody and could no longer return to his father’s house.
