Nigerian passport rises nine places in global ranking

In the recent Henley Passport Index for Q2 2023, the Nigerian passport has made a significant jump, moving up from the 100th position to 91st among 199 countries and 227 travel destinations evaluated.

The Henley Passport Index gauges the strength of passports based on the number of countries their holders can visit without a prior visa.

While this rise indicates an improvement in global access for Nigerian passport holders, it is essential to note that the number of countries accessible without visas or with visa-on-arrival remains at 46.

Insights suggest that this elevation in ranking may not solely reflect an actual enhancement in passport strength, but rather a consequence of other countries experiencing a decline in their previous ratings.

Compared to other countries in the Economic Community of West African States, Nigeria’s passport remains the least powerful.

Experts assert that boosting the country’s reputation on the global stage requires a firm implementation of measures to combat drug-related crimes and cybercrime, as well as fostering economic stability and tourism.

Forging more beneficial bilateral agreements with other countries could further improve travel opportunities for Nigerians, as reciprocity plays a crucial role in visa-free access.
