Resident doctors commence indefinite strike today

The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has announced an indefinite strike starting from Wednesday, July 26, 2023, at 12 am.

NARD President, Dr. Emeka Orji, disclosed that the decision was made during the July National Executive Council meeting in Lagos.

The doctors are demanding several key issues to be addressed, including the implementation of a one-for-one replacement policy for healthcare workers, the discontinuation of downgrading membership certificates issued by the West African Postgraduate Medical and Surgical Colleges, immediate payment of salary arrears, implementation of the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure, a new hazard allowance, and the domestication of the Medical Residency Training Act.

Orji emphasized that the critical demand for one-for-one replacement is due to doctors leaving and those remaining facing excessive workloads, leading to unfortunate incidents such as the death of a doctor in Bayelsa State.

Despite previous interventions, the doctors feel that their demands have been ignored for too long.
