House of reps charges NERC to halt estimated billing

The House of Representatives has directed the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) to put an end to the estimated billing of electricity consumers nationwide by distribution companies (DisCos).

The House also urged NERC to penalize the DisCos for their inadequate power supply and devise compensation plans for individuals, communities, private, and public entities that invested in the distribution network.

The motion was brought forward by Afuape Moruf, a member representing Abeokuta South Federal Constituency of Ogun State, who called on NERC to address the challenges faced by electricity consumers.

He highlighted that DisCos have consistently provided poor services to consumers despite earning substantial revenue.

Consumers are disconnected by DisCos despite paying for meters, cables, and transformers.

The House further charged its Committee on Power to engage with NERC and DisCos to address the issues hindering effective power distribution in the country.

The goal is to ensure fair treatment for electricity consumers and hold DisCos accountable for their responsibilities as mandated by the Electricity Act, 2023.
