Vice President Kashim Shettima revealed in Rome that the administration led by President Bola Tinubu has mobilized over half a billion dollars for Nigeria’s food system transformation.
The announcement was made during the UN Food Systems Summit in Italy, with the aim of overhauling the country’s food systems.
The funds will be directed towards innovation finance for food system transformation, the development of Nigeria’s agro value chain, and the Special Agro-Industrial Processing Zones programs.
The funding was obtained through a combination of domestic resources, multilateral development banks, international financial institutions, climate funds, and leading agro-businesses.
The Vice President also highlighted the impact of the Value Chain Development Programme, which empowered vulnerable farmers and youth to engage in commercial partnerships with major food processing and marketing firms like OLAM.
He mentioned that the government addressed food security by releasing grains and fertilizers after the fuel subsidy removal.
President Tinubu declared a state of emergency in food security, emphasizing its importance within the National Security Council.
