Biden calls on Israel to delay ‘divisive’ judicial reforms

In a statement on Sunday, President Joe Biden urged Israel to carefully consider its proposed “divisive” judicial reforms, given the array of challenges the country is facing.

The president emphasized that the priority should be fostering unity and seeking consensus rather than rushing through contentious changes.

The reform, which aims to curb the power of judges, has sparked opposing protests, with supporters advocating for balance of power and critics fearing it may undermine Israel’s democracy.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the driving force behind the reforms, plans to present the proposal to the Knesset for a vote.

Justice Minister Yariv Levin made adjustments to the bill to address concerns, but opposition remains strong, with around 20 legislators prepared to speak against it.
