Abdulrasheed Bawa, the suspended Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), has been in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) for 33 days.
Bawa was arrested by the secret police on June 14, shortly after his suspension by President Bola Tinubu.
The specific allegations and level of investigation against him have not been disclosed by the DSS, and it remains unclear if charges will be filed against him in court.
A statement from the DSS spokesperson, Peter Afunanya, stated that Bawa was invited to the DSS facility for investigative activities.
Subsequently, the DSS reportedly conducted searches at Bawa’s residence and office in Abuja. However, there has been no recent update from the DSS regarding his case.
Concerns have been raised about the legality of Bawa’s continued detention without trial.
Human rights lawyer Pelumi Olajengbesi described it as unconstitutional and a violation of Bawa’s fundamental rights.
He called for the DSS to release Bawa or bring him before a court to face charges.
