The Abia State Government has announced the discovery and elimination of 2,300 ghost workers from its payroll system, resulting in savings of over N220 million on the monthly wage bill.
The detection of these ghost workers was made during an ongoing verification exercise of civil servants in the state.
Deaconess Njum Onyemenam, the Accountant General of Abia State, made the announcement in Umuahia, the state capital, following a meeting with Governor Dr. Alex Otti.
Onyemenam stated that the verification process is still in progress, and more ghost workers are expected to be identified.
Through the implementation of a unified payment system, the state has successfully weeded out these non-existent workers.
The Accountant General also confirmed that the governor has instructed the payment of April salary arrears left behind by the previous administration, as well as the June pensions for retirees.
She assured that local government workers who failed to submit their verified payment schedules would receive their June salaries this week.
