The Ogun State Social Orientation and Safety Corps, also known as So-Safe Corps, has apprehended the leader of an armed robbery gang named Obani Desmond, and seized four rifles from him.
The state Commander of the Corps, Soji Ganzallo, announced this development in a statement issued through the corps’ Public Relations Officer, Moruf Yusuf, on Wednesday.
Ganzallo revealed that after multiple unsuccessful attempts to capture Desmond, the 32-year-old suspect was finally arrested on Wednesday.
The statement mentioned that prior information gathering led to the discovery of his whereabouts, ultimately leading to his arrest.
According to the statement, on the morning of July 12, 2023, So-Safe Corps officers on routine patrol, acting on gathered intelligence, apprehended Desmond as he attempted to break into a building located at 2, Ayo Ogunbanwo Street, Abule-Iroko in Ado-Odo Ota Local Government Area, where he resided at 25, Agunbiade Street, Orija.
The suspect had previously managed to escape arrest on multiple occasions but was caught in the act of hiding during the robbery attempt.
Desmond confessed to his involvement in the crime and offered to disclose the location where he stored the firearms used in his operations.
He admitted to targeting gold jewelry and claimed that he did not carry arms during the robbery.
According to the statement, without any form of coercion, Desmond promised to lead the team to where the arms were kept for his gang’s criminal activities.
The suspect also confessed to his participation in violent attacks in both Ogun and Lagos states.
He urged the Corps to gather additional valuable information from a certain Mr. Jeje, who he claimed was in possession of an AK47 rifle for the gang’s use.
