The asset recovery committee established by Governor Hyacinth Alia of Benue State took action on Tuesday by deploying towing vehicles to the automobile workshop owned by former governor Samuel Ortom and confiscating several vehicles.
The Chief Press Secretary of Governor Alia, Kula Tersoo, previously revealed that 29 government vehicles were allegedly stolen by the former governor.
Tersoo described the pitiful state of the Government House, highlighting vandalized furniture, window blinds, electronics, and household appliances.
In addition, all vehicles associated with the governor’s office, including an ambulance and a press crew bus, were reported missing.
Despite a court order obtained by Ortom and his deputy, Benson Abounu, to prevent the asset recovery committee from pursuing them, state agents went to Ortom’s automobile workshop to seize vehicles, albeit encountering resistance from the workers.
Ortom and Abounu have filed a lawsuit seeking clarification on whether their legitimately allocated properties can be considered state government assets and questioning the authority of the asset recovery committee.
