Nigerian man sentenced to one year in prison for attempted rape of Australian tourist in Bali

A Nigerian man, Idongesit Joseph Zion, has been given a one-year prison sentence after being found guilty of attempting to rape an Australian female tourist while they were both on vacation in Bali, Indonesia.

The verdict was delivered at the Denpasar District Court on July 6. Presiding Judge Ida Bagus Bamadewa Patiputra declared Zion legally and convincingly guilty of attempted rape and sentenced him to one year in prison.

The court determined that Zion had fulfilled the elements of the Indonesian Penal Code related to attempted rape and noted that his actions violated decency values.

The prosecutor emphasized the harm suffered by the victim and the violation of decency values.

Mitigating factors, including forgiveness exchanged between the victim and the defendant during the trial, were considered.

The incident occurred when the victim and Zion encountered each other at a club in Canggu.

Despite the victim’s refusal, Zion deceived her and took her to his residence, where the assault was attempted.

The victim managed to raise an alarm, and with the help of Zion’s friend and her sister, she escaped the traumatic ordeal.
