Niger state governor rejects education subsidy, stresses vocational training and scholarships

Governor Mallam Umar Bago of Niger State has rejected the idea of subsidizing education, expressing concerns that it would compromise the quality of learning in schools.

Instead, he emphasized the importance of vocational training in higher institutions, suggesting that short-term vocational courses should be made available for candidates who are unable to pursue degree qualifications.

Governor Bago proposed the identification and provision of scholarships to the most deserving students as a means of encouragement.

He also highlighted the shortage of medical professionals in the state and expressed the government’s commitment to supporting those interested in pursuing medical-related courses.

The governor urged stakeholders in education to explore innovative approaches, such as leveraging technology for e-learning.

During a visit by the New Gate University’s management and staff, Governor Bago encouraged public-private partnerships for infrastructure development, renewable energy adoption, and investments that would foster growth and development in the institution.

The Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Yusuf Sadiq, emphasized the significance of prioritizing the education of young individuals, and he mentioned existing scholarship programs benefiting students from various backgrounds.

The university offers courses in areas like ICT, cyber security, and medicine, with the aim of producing graduates who will contribute to the state’s development.

The delegation from the university was led by Pro-Chancellor Nuhu Hassan.
