NDLEA chairman orders arrest of sellers and users of ‘Laughing Gas’

The Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Buba Marwa, has instructed law enforcement agencies to arrest individuals involved in the sale and use of nitrous oxide, commonly known as “laughing gas.”

In a statement released by NDLEA spokesperson Femi Babafemi on Tuesday, it was revealed that laughing gas is becoming increasingly popular as a recreational drug in Nigeria.

The agency emphasized its commitment to taking strong action against anyone, regardless of their social status, engaged in the illegal sale or use of the gas.

Nitrous oxide, also referred to as N20, is a colorless gas used by medical professionals for sedation and pain relief during minor medical procedures.

However, it has gained traction among young party-goers and fun-seekers who inhale the gas from balloons for its euphoric effects.

The NDLEA warned of the dangerous consequences of nitrous oxide abuse, including dizziness, disorientation, hallucinations, and the risk of suffocation or neurological complications.

The agency called on parents, guardians, and stakeholders to remain vigilant and educate young individuals about the hazards associated with experimenting with or misusing this substance, as it poses significant threats to mental and overall well-being.
