The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has issued a warning that it will contact Google to permanently remove digital money lending apps that harass and defame customers from its Play Store.
CEO of FCCPC, Babatunde Irukera, made this announcement during an interview on Arise TV.
He emphasized that while digital lenders are allowed to operate in the country, those engaging in consumer harassment will face immediate action.
Irukera stated, “If these lenders, who have already been approved, continue to harass customers, even if it occurs once, we will permanently remove them from the Google Play Store.
As we identify such cases, we will take action against them.”
He also addressed debt recovery, stating that chronic borrowers should be restricted from further borrowing.
However, individuals who genuinely have payment difficulties should not be subjected to the distress and frustration caused by defamatory messages.
