Incidents of theft have reportedly occurred at Murtala Muhammad Airport, where recently installed airfield lighting systems on the domestic runway 18/36L have gone missing.
The disappearance of these crucial safety components has raised concerns about security at Nigeria’s busiest airports.
According to an anonymous source, the perpetrators took advantage of the runway’s closure for over three months to commit the crime.
The source alleged that certain employees of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) colluded with external individuals to steal the airport lighting equipment.
As a result, several heads of relevant departments at FAAN have been suspended, and investigations are underway to identify those responsible.
The incidents are believed to be the work of a syndicate involving insiders who have access to restricted areas.
FAAN’s Managing Director has expressed displeasure and ordered the suspension of security personnel responsible for guarding critical airport facilities.
FAAN has launched investigations and is determined to prevent such incidents from reoccurring.
