A 30-year-old hotel worker, Jeffrey Ehizojie, has been sentenced to death by hanging for the strangulation of his employer, Olusola Olusoga, and the hotel manager, Tunji Omikunle, in Lagos.
The judgment was delivered by Justice Oyindamola Ogala at an Ikeja High Court on July 11, 2023.
Justice Ogala stated that the prosecution had successfully proven its case beyond a reasonable doubt.
Ehizojie was found guilty of assaulting and strangling the Managing Director of Etsahol Hotel and Suites, located in Ojodu-Berger, Lagos.
The court based its decision on the defendant’s confessional statement and circumstantial evidence.
The confessional statement revealed that Ehizojie and other hotel staff planned to tie up Olusoga and steal her money due to alleged mistreatment.
The court noted that the defendant’s claim of being unaware of the deaths until his arrest in Port Harcourt was questionable, considering his presence at the crime scene.
Justice Ogala concluded that the circumstantial evidence overwhelmingly pointed to the defendant’s guilt.
She declared Ehizojie guilty on the two-count charge against him and sentenced him to death by hanging.
The state prosecution presented four witnesses, including hotel staff and police officers, who testified against the convict.
The crime committed by Ehizojie violated Section 223 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
