President Bola Tinubu of Nigeria has been elected as the Chairman of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
Speaking during the 63rd Ordinary Session of the Authority in Guinea-Bissau, Tinubu emphasized the importance of upholding democracy, urging ECOWAS to reject coups and address the rising threats of terrorism in the region.
He pledged to harmonize frameworks and work towards the realization of ECOWAS’ goals under his leadership.
Tinubu also stressed the need for strengthened democratic institutions, human rights, and the rule of law.
He called for increased private sector participation, trade facilitation, and regional cooperation to foster economic development.
Tinubu’s tenure as Chairman will focus on promoting peace, democratic transitions, and enhanced security cooperation among member states.
The outgoing Chairman, President Umaro Embalo of Guinea-Bissau, commended Nigeria and Sierra Leone for their successful democratic elections, emphasizing the importance of constitutional order in the region.
