It has been reported that more than 400 inmates who escaped from the Kuje Medium Security Correctional Centre in Nigeria’s Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, during a jailbreak on July 5, 2022, are still at large even after one year.
It was previously revealed on October 4, 2022, that 422 escapees were yet to be recaptured.
The jailbreak saw a total of 879 inmates, including 64 high-profile Boko Haram terrorists, fleeing the facility.
The Islamic State in West Africa Province (ISWAP) claimed responsibility for the attack shortly afterward.
Media reports indicate that as of October 3, 2022, only 32 out of the 454 escapees had been apprehended.
According to Abubakar Umar, the spokesperson for the Nigeria Correctional Service (NCoS), a total of 415 inmates have been recaptured thus far, with efforts ongoing to locate and arrest the remaining escapees.
Umar emphasized that significant security measures have been put in place to prevent a recurrence of such incidents and that there is now enhanced collaboration between the correctional service and other security agencies.
The investigation into the Kuje attack has been concluded; however, the details remain undisclosed due to security concerns.
Umar assured the public that new security measures, including the installation of solar energy, increased facility walls, and advanced monitoring technology, have been implemented to bolster security in correctional facilities across the country.
