Within just seven hours of its launch, Meta’s new Twitter rival, Threads, has garnered over 10 million registered accounts, according to Mark Zuckerberg, the billionaire CEO of Meta.
Zuckerberg, who goes by the username “Zuck on Threads,” shared the announcement on Wednesday night, coinciding with the debut of the new app.
In a series of posts and replies, Zuckerberg expressed his astonishment, stating, “10 million sign-ups in seven hours” alongside a “mindblown” emoji.
Earlier in the day, he had mentioned that Threads had received two million registrations in the first two hours, followed by five million within the first four hours.
Threads is closely connected to Instagram, which boasts approximately two billion monthly active users, as Meta had revealed in October.
The app enables users to create Threads accounts using their Instagram usernames and connect with individuals they follow on the image-based platform.
Zuckerberg expressed the vision of combining the best aspects of Instagram to offer a new experience for text, ideas, and discussions.
As Meta’s Threads gains momentum, it enters the social media landscape where Twitter remains the dominant text-based platform, but with recent restrictions on free user access and an updated verification system.
Twitter estimated having around 237.8 million daily active users in 2022, just before Elon Musk’s acquisition of the platform.
