A 32-year-old man named Auwal Usman has been sentenced by a Bauchi State Chief Magistrates’ Court for using a machete to cut off the hands of his friend in the state.
Presiding Judge Haruna Mamman found Usman guilty of inflicting severe injuries on his friend during a physical altercation.
According to the police prosecutor, Yusuf Musa, the incident occurred following a dispute between Usman, a resident of Dogon Ruwa village in Ari, and his friend Sabo Abduwa.
In the course of the fight, Usman took out a machete and cut off both of Abduwa’s hands.
Abduwa was rushed to Ningi General Hospital for immediate medical attention. Unfortunately, due to the severity of his injuries, one hand had to be amputated to save his life.
The prosecutor stated that Usman’s actions violated Section 241 of the penal code, which deals with causing grievous harm.
During the trial, Usman admitted to the charges but pleaded for leniency, claiming to be a first-time offender.
However, Mamman, in delivering the judgment, emphasized the gravity of the crime and the irreversible disability inflicted upon the victim.
Usman was subsequently sentenced to two years in a correctional center without the option of a fine.
He was ordered to pay the victim N150,000 to cover medical expenses.
