Barcelona completes free transfer signing of defender Inigo Martinez

Barcelona has officially announced the acquisition of defender Inigo Martinez on a free transfer following the expiration of his contract with Athletic Bilbao.

The 32-year-old centre-back, who is also a Spain international, has signed a contract with Barcelona until 2025.

This signing aligns with Barcelona’s recent strategy of recruiting experienced players without incurring transfer fees.

Martinez joins the likes of Ilkay Gundogan, Andreas Christensen, and Franck Kessie, who were also acquired by the club after their contracts expired.

The statement from Barcelona confirms that Martinez’s contract includes a release clause of €400 million ($435 million).

Having previously played for Real Sociedad, Martinez moved to Athletic Bilbao in January 2017 for a club-record fee of €32 million ($35 million).

During his time at Athletic, Martinez made 177 appearances, scored eight goals, and secured the Spanish Super Cup in 2021, while also reaching two Copa del Rey finals.
