EFCC nabs 16 internet fraudsters in landmark case

The Enugu Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has achieved a significant milestone by securing the conviction of 16 individuals involved in internet fraud.

The conviction took place on June 27, 2023, before Justice F.I Riman of the Federal High Court in Akwa, Anambra State.

The defendants faced separate one-count charges related to impersonation.

The convicted individuals include Ukwuoma Mmasi Joseph, Godwin John Ifeanyi, Azubuike Chimaobi Kelvin, Chukwuma Peter, Mboji Henry Chima, Ngene Chukwuma Samuel, Michael Ogbodo, Michael Elijah, Okafor Ifeanyi Gabriel, Obiozor Franklin, Agah Chukwuebuka David, and Iloabuchi Damian Okafor.

Others are Ifeanyi Jeff Ukwuoma, Chukwudalu Marvellous Kalu, Kulugh Mbatierev Simon, and Paschal Ugwuanyi.

Ukwuoma Mmasi Joseph, one of the convicts, was charged with impersonating a United States soldier named Nelson with the intent to defraud unsuspecting foreign nationals.

The defendants pleaded guilty to their charges, and the court, after considering the prosecution’s argument, sentenced each of them to one year imprisonment or a fine of N150,000.
