Sunshine Edafe, a 30-year-old woman, appeared before a Magistrates’ Court in Yaba, Lagos State, where she was charged by the police for supposedly posting defamatory messages on social media targeting Pascal Offiah.
The defendant faced three counts, including intent to defraud, threats to life and property, and defamation, before Magistrate Adeola Olatunbosun.
According to the prosecutor, Rita Momoh, Edafe allegedly demanded that Offiah purchase a house and a Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) for her.
When Offiah refused, she reportedly resorted to circulating threatening and defamatory content about him on social media.
The prosecutor stated that the offenses were committed between 2021 and 2022 in Lagos State.
The charges against Edafe were in violation of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015 (Sections 302 and 376) and the Criminal Code Act Cap C38 LFN 2004 (Section 376).
The accusations included publishing a written threat message on social media with the intent to defraud and posting defamatory statements about Offiah to coerce him into buying her a house and SUV.
Despite the charges, Edafe pleaded not guilty. The magistrate granted her bail in the sum of N200,000 (Nigerian Naira) with two responsible sureties who could meet the same amount.
The case was adjourned until September 4, 2023, for mention.
