A 30-year-old man named Babatunde Olayinka was brought before a Magistrates’ Court in Yaba, Lagos State, after being accused by the police of stealing phones valued at N680,000 from two students of Yaba College of Technology.
Olayinka faced charges of theft and appeared before Magistrate O. Y Adefope.
According to the prosecutor, Haruna Magaji, the defendant committed the crime on June 7, 2023, at around 2 pm at the Yaba College of Technology Sports Complex.
Olayinka allegedly stole an iPhone 13 Promax and a Tecno Pova phone belonging to Olamilekan Raheem and Oyindamola Masawe.
The charges brought against Olayinka were in violation of Sections 168(d) and 287(1) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, Nigeria 2015.
The prosecution argued that Olayinka’s actions were likely to cause a breach of peace and that he had committed theft.
Olayinka pleaded not guilty to the charges, leading Magistrate Adefope to grant him bail in the sum of N500,000 with two responsible sureties who could meet the same amount.
The case was adjourned until August 29, 2023, for mention.
