Man sentenced to 10 months in prison for stealing generator

A 25-year-old man named Bala Hassan has been sentenced to 10 months imprisonment by the Kaduna Chief Magistrates’ Court for his involvement in a conspiracy to steal a generator set worth N450,000.

Hassan, a resident of Ungwan Dosa in Kaduna, pleaded guilty to the charges and appealed for leniency.

The Magistrate, Mr. Ibrahim Emmanuel, delivered the judgement, stating that the defendant’s admission of guilt led to his conviction and sentencing.

Considering Hassan as a first-time offender who did not waste the court’s time and resources, the magistrate provided him with an option to pay a fine of N20,000 in lieu of the prison term.

Emmanuel emphasized that the judgement serves as a deterrent to others who may consider engaging in criminal activities.

The convict was ordered to compensate the complainant, Mohammed Danladi, with the sum of N450,000.

The prosecution counsel, Chidi Leo, had informed the court that on June 23, Hassan and another person, who remains at large, conspired to steal the generator from the complainant’s property in Badarawa, Kaduna.

Despite the defendant’s admission during the police investigation, efforts to recover the stolen generator were unsuccessful.

The offenses committed by Hassan are in violation of Sections 302 and 217 of the Penal Code of Kaduna State, 2017.
