French police fatally shoot teenage driver who refused to stop

A teenager was fatally shot by French police after he refused to comply with a traffic check in Nanterre, a suburb of Paris.

The incident has sparked shock and raised concerns about the use of force by security forces. According to prosecutors, the 17-year-old broke road rules and attempted to flee before being shot by the police.

Despite attempts to resuscitate him, the teenager died at the scene. The officer responsible for firing the fatal shot has been detained and is facing charges of homicide.

A video circulating on social media, confirmed as authentic by AFP, shows two police officers trying to stop the vehicle.

One officer points his weapon at the driver through the window and shoots at close range when the driver drives off.

The car only travels a short distance before crashing. The IGPN, the national police inspectorate, has initiated an investigation into possible intentional killing by a person in a position of public authority.

The Interior Minister, Gerald Darmanin, acknowledged the shocking nature of the video and called for respect for the family’s grief and the presumption of innocence for the police officers involved.

The Paris police chief, Laurent Nunez, admitted that the officer’s actions raise questions, but suggested that the officer may have felt threatened.

The family’s lawyer condemned the shooting, stating that the video clearly depicts the officer killing the young man in cold blood.
