Former Golden Eaglets star and FC Copenhagen forward Akinkunmi Amoo has been sentenced to one year in prison for sexual assault by a Danish court.

The news of his sentencing was confirmed by former BBC World Football reporter Osasu Obayiuwana. Amoo, who is appealing the decision, received the sentence on June 23, 2023.

The winger had been facing criminal charges since April, July, and August 2022, and was arrested on September 10, 2022, before being released on bail on October 7.

The details of the trial’s outcome were reported by Danish newspaper Ekstra Bladet, stating that Amoo was found guilty of charges including rape in a sexual relationship, attempted rape, and violations against two other women.

The 21-year-old player was part of the Nigerian Golden Eaglets squad in the 2019 U-17 AFCON and the U-17 World Cup.

He later moved to Hammarby in Sweden before joining FC Copenhagen in January 2022.
