Protests erupted in Osogbo, the capital of Osun State, as approximately 50 communities gathered at the regional office of the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) to express their outrage over the disconnection of their electricity.
The demonstrators accused IBEDC of causing financial losses to their communities and condemned the unjustifiable action.
Dapo Onanuga, a representative of the protesters and a resident of Ayegbami community, highlighted their grievances, stating that they were disconnected from the Idi-oro transformer without reasonable cause.
The communities demanded equal treatment for both postpaid and prepaid customers and rejected the IBEDC’s demand to collect payments from the residents themselves.
The state government called for an immediate resolution of the crisis to prevent further escalation, emphasizing the potential consequences of the blackout on security and business activities in the affected areas.
